I'm still trying to work out how it can be _this_ easy..! I placed a web order, along with some calling credit, and received an email with my account details immediately.
On logging into voiptalk for the first time, I was presented with my new 0845 number, which was by default allocated as an incoming number to the newly created siptalk account.
I downloaded the XTEN softphone, followed the setup instructions here on viptalk, then send my Brother in the UK an SMS and asked him to call me on my new 0845 number.
Seconds later, my XTEN softphone started ringing, with my Brothers phone number displayed on the Caller ID display. IT WORKS!
I live and work in Sweden, so a local rate UK number will save my family and friends a lot of money keeping in touch. I have tried many other software-based systems, Callserve, PC-Telephone.com, Skype, Netmeeting, Instant Messengers etc, but they all have a big limiting factor. All are OK if you are _only_ interested in saving money for yourself, but all of them effectively make it HARDER for others to get in touch with you, and ultimately mean that you have to be the one that calls, every time!
Providing a local rate telephone number to your friends and relatives means THEY can save money too, and they don't have to be computer nerds to make it work, they just dial a number. This is perfect for the "technologically challenged" older generation!
I have not yet taken delivery of my Handytone ATA-486, but next week I will be picking that up, and then taking incoming calls will not be dependent on my computer being switched on.
