Here are my latest experiences with Aastra 480i. This is only an interim review, I intend to post a final review after a little more time using this phone. The issue with the phone registering correctly with voiptalk servers has been resolved. Firmware as supplied when the phone arrived from the supplier (not voiptalk) was out of date by many months. Unfortunately (and this may not be voiptalks problem) the link to download the latest version for this phone was not correctly set up on the suppliers web site and also voiptalk.
I am tending to attribute this to Aastra not the other companies. So after some crisp e-mails to Aastra UK, followed by telephone calls using POTS [Plain Old Telephone System] to a company who are major voip phone suppliers and don't appear to have any VoiP telephone numbers for clients to call in on, Sherlock Homes and Doctor Watson (me) finally found out that there were two recommended firmware upgrades to download and implement.
Being a 60 year old uneducated bumbling non technical person (no computers at my Grammar School, they were just thinking about buying Abacus from China in the 1960's) the mechanism for actually getting the firmware files and then upgrading my Aastra product was a somewhat nerve wracking process, to say the least.
I succeeded. This resolved the issue of voiptalk connections to the server.
One has to ask the question, why is it incumbent on the purchaser to have to upgrade firmware with releases that have been issued more than 6 months before the telephone was purchased.
That said, I can see that the Aastra 480i has some very nice features............. More reports will follow... If anyone is interested in sharing their experiences with this Aastra phone please contact me. The challenge now is try to get the phone book to work in a useful up datable way from a computer file... Having had to re-set the factory defaults twice on the 480i phone, causing the internal phone book to vanish forever into the cyberspace cemetery, I am beginning to be reluctant to waste more time on setting up the internal phone book.............. Could Aastra please take note..........
There are thousands and thousands of bumbling computer illiterate clients like me........... Simple software systems PLEASE for VOIP phone books [downloading and uploading such important data].... Not gobbledygook for IT technicians with a years of experience behind them. John Skelton 8th January 2008
