VoIP FAQ

How do I prevent unauthorised access to my SIP account?

Your VoIPtalk login details and SIP passwords provide access to your account. If you disclose these details to anyone, or they manage to obtain them without your permission or knowledge, they would be able to log into your account and make calls, running up call charges and using up your call credit. This username/password combination must therefore be kept secure at all times. You should always choose strong passwords for your account (both the VoIPtalk web site login password and your SIP passwords). A strong password would typically have the following characteristics:

- Minimum 9 characters, Maximum 10
- Includes letters
- Includes mixed case
- Includes numbers
- Includes punctuation
- No similar characters

If you are using VoIPtalk with an IP PBX platform such as Asterisk or 3CX, you should also make sure that secure passwords are used for the telephone extensions particularly if the telephone system can be accessed from outside your network. Never leave default passwords on any accounts or hardware - change them to strong passwords. If you are disposing of an IP telephone or any other device which stores passwords then make sure that you remove any password details first.
